Tech Savvy Articles

It was fun to look at other people's articles and experiments. Although many of the same technologies were used, it was interesting to read what my peers learned from their experiences. Karissa Dodds said that technology provides teachers with abundant resources. And I thought, if there are so many resources out there, why aren't more teachers using them?! Her statement made me appreciate this technology class a little more. Sarah Kidd supports Karissa by saying that it is the teacher's full responsibility to tap into those resources and use them! Sarah used the digital microscope in her experiment and enlightened us on the many benefits of that piece of technology. She said that it saves time spent on managing the usage of multiple microscopes and ultimately helps with classroom management. Anonther great benefit is that classrooms do not have to spend the money to supply multiple microscopes, when only one needs to be purchased for everyone to see. A major benefit mentioned by Karissa when using the temperature probes is that students can collect and analyze their own data! How fun! Using technology engages students and introduces them to new ways of learning and discovery.

The Tech Savvy Teacher

So you don’t think you are tech savvy? Do you feel like you are behind on the times? That is okay! In this column, we will present fun and easy ways to integrate technology into your classroom. All you need is a computer and a temperature sensor probe the Logger Pro software.
Simply plug the temperature sensor into the USB port of your computer and open the Logger Pro software.

This experiment addresses the Third Grade Science Standard 5 Objective 3 which states that students will demonstrate that heat may be produced when objects are rubbed against one another. Allow students to experiment rubbing the probe against various objects and materials to see how the temperature increases or decreases. Students can observe the temperature changes by looking at the relationship of temperature and variables used, such as, speed of rubbing or materials used. A fun discovery activity may be challenging the students to form letters on the graph, such as M, W, N, V, U, etc.

Technology brings excitement into the classroom and engages students at a whole new level. Children live in a world of technology and need hands-on learning. This is a great way to bring the two together. The temperature sensors and the software program allow the students to be directly involved in their learning. They are able to easily observe the effect of friction and the variables used.

Delicious Account

This website is great for sharing ideas with other educators! It is a great way to organize my own favorite websites and interactive activities, while also being able to see what other teachers find useful. Check out the link below!

Web 2.0

Web 2.0 is something I was completely unfamiliar with. I thought that cool tools were out there, but I honestly never saw myself learning about them. I am so glad that I am learning about some things that will help my teaching. RSS options allow me to be connected and updated constantly. RSS tools are extremely helpful becuase they keep me informed without me having to do anything extra. It sounds pretty confusing at first, but I am surprised to learn that RSS is actually pretty simple and easy. As a teacher, I will be more organized and prepared if I use the tools available to me, such as the Goodreads program. I will be able to keep updated on latest information and news to apply to my teaching and classroom.

PLE

I chose to use a blog to learn how to create one for my own family! I am excited to learn how to use more technologies and techniques that will ultimately help me be a better teacher and mother.
